The San Diego Padres have been wheelin’ and dealin’ over the past week, picking up an entirely new outfield. First it was Matt Kemp from the Dodgers, then it was Wil Myers from the Rays, and today, it has been reported that they have signed Justin Upton from the Braves.
Let’s focus on the Wil Myers deal. Overall, here’s the breakdown of the Myers trade:
The San Diego Padres acquired:
OF-R Wil Myers,
C-R Ryan Hanigan,
LHP Jose Castillo
RHP Gerardo Reyes
The Washington Nationals acquired (from SD):
RHP Joe Ross
SS-R Trea Turner
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired (from SD):
C-R Rene Rivera,
RHP Burch Smith
1B-L Jake Bauers
Was the price for Wil Myers too high in giving up Trea Tuner? Here’s how one NL scout described Trea:
Out of the Park baseball rates Turner as a potential 72/80 with a current rating of 20 (still very raw), where Myers is a potential 79/80 and currently has a rating of 66. But just take a look at that scouting report for Trea: “It’s possible he could be Hall of Fame material.”
So, do you give up HoF material POTENTIAL for a Rookie of the Year winner whose stats have fallen every year since? I think Washington comes out as the clear winner 5 years down the line. I keep Turner and hope that Will Venable, Cameron Maybin or Seth Smith can hold down one of the corner spots that Kemp and Upton aren’t taking.
